We teach R.E. according to the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus. This reflects the fact that the religious traditions in Britain are as a whole mainly Christian, whilst taking into account the other main religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam and Sikhism.
Our pupils do not live in a diverse area however, they do live close to one of the most ethnically and diverse cities in the United Kingdom – Leicester.
It is our intent that we aim to develop children’s understanding of a range of religions and the impact of these beliefs on individuals and the wider world. We encourage children to ask questions and show respect for other people’s views and opinions.
Respect: Through the RE curriculum our children gain a broader understanding of different faiths and beliefs and what society gains from diversity. Our children are encouraged to express their personal beliefs, values and experiences whilst respecting the right of others to have different views and ways of life.
Responsibility: Through RE, children understand that we are all equal and are empowered to make positive choices in our own lives and the lives of others. In this way, children understand the world, their role in it, and the responsibility that goes with it.
Reflection: We encourage our children to be reflective about their own life experiences and how this can support them to learn about, and from religion. We inspire them to become critical thinkers who ask challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs, commitment and belonging.
The children are also encouraged to explore their own views, values and beliefs and discuss them in a respectful manner. In this way the subject makes a major contribution to the spiritual development of children.
We are currently reviewing our RE curriculum with a view to launching a revised one for 2025/2026.
