The focus language at Broomfield is French, although, the choice of language is secondary to the nurturing of confidence, enthusiasm and a love of languages. Through cross-curricular and positive language learning experiences, we aim to facilitate the development of effective and transferable language learning skills that will provide a gateway to the wider world.
Our vision is for all pupils to become lifelong language learners.
Resilience: Learning a new language often involves making mistakes or struggling to express yourself. Resilience is shown when children keep trying, even when they don’t understand straight away. Our children learn from their mistakes and see them as learning opportunities, improving their skills with each attempt.
Respect: Our children show respect through trying to speak in French correctly, pronouncing words with accuracy and therefore showing respect for the phonics, culture and language. They also learn about respect for cultures where French is spoken, exploring traditions, customs and values. Children respect each other during lessons by listening to others when they speak, supporting each other even if they make mistakes.
Risk-taking: This is shown when children confidently use French, even if they are unsure about the exact words. Their willingness to try is a big part of language learning.
Responsibility: This is shown by actively engaging in class activities such as speaking French during conversations, listening to French songs and taking part in group tasks with enthusiasm.
Reflection: Our children consider their progress by thinking about where they can improve. This can be thinking about vocabulary or grammar they have mastered.
